Arusha National Park: The Underrated Day Trip From Arusha

By the Guides at Bantu Pori Journeys

Every week, thousands of safari vehicles roll through Arusha on their way to the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Tarangire. They stop for fuel, for lunch, maybe for a night at a hotel. Then they leave.

Almost none of them look up.

Right there, 35 kilometres from the centre of Arusha, sits one of the most underrated national parks in East Africa. A park with a crater lake, a forest, a mountain you can hike, and wildlife that would stop you cold if you saw it anywhere else in Tanzania.

Most people drive past it on the way to somewhere else.

We think that is one of the biggest missed opportunities in travel in Tanzania.

What Arusha National Park Actually Is

Arusha National Park covers 552 square kilometres at the foot of Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest peak. It sits between two very different worlds: the dry savannah of the Maasai Steppe to the east and the lush Kilimanjaro forests to the northeast.

The result is a park unlike anything else in Tanzania. In one day you can walk through a montane forest, paddle a canoe across a crater lake, watch a hippo surface ten metres from your boat, and look up to see the snow-capped summit of Mount Meru disappearing into the clouds above you.

No crowds. No traffic jams of safari vehicles. No fighting for position at a lion sighting.

Just you, your guide, and one of Tanzania’s quietest wilderness areas.

What You Will See

Let us be honest with you, the way we are honest with all our clients: Arusha National Park is not a Big Five park. You will not see lions here. You will not see elephants or leopards.

What you will see is this:

Colobus monkeys swinging through the forest canopy above the road, their black and white tails trailing behind them like flags. Buffalo grazing in clearings so close you could almost reach out and touch them. Giraffe moving through the open woodland in that slow, deliberate way that never gets old no matter how many times you have seen it.

Warthogs. Zebra. Reedbuck. Mongoose. Dik-dik. Bushbuck.

And birds. Arusha National Park has over 400 recorded bird species. If you are a birder, this park will keep you busy for days. The crowned eagle, the silvery-cheeked hornbill, the bar-tailed trogon- species that are genuinely difficult to find elsewhere in the Northern Circuit.

Flamingos gather on Lake Longil, one of the small alkaline lakes inside the park. At certain times of year, there are hundreds of them, turning the lake edge pink.

The Momella Lakes - Our Favourite Hidden Gem

Seven crater lakes sit inside Arusha National Park, collectively known as the Momella Lakes. Each one is slightly different in colour and chemistry. Stand on the ridge between two of them, and you can see one that is green and one that is blue, side by side, separated by a few hundred metres of land.

We bring our clients here and watch their faces change.

These lakes are fed by underground streams from Mount Meru. The different mineral compositions create different algae, which create different colours. It is not a tourist trick. It is geology.

On a clear morning, with Kilimanjaro visible on the horizon behind you and flamingos feeding in the shallows below, this is one of the most beautiful views in Tanzania that almost nobody photographs.

That is exactly why we love it.

Canoeing on Ngurdoto Crater Lake

Ngurdoto Crater is sometimes called the Little Ngorongoro. A collapsed volcanic caldera about 3 kilometres across, its floor is a swamp and forest that no human is permitted to enter. You look down into it from the rim and watch buffalo moving in the reeds below, undisturbed.

But the experience that surprises our clients most is the canoe safari on the Momella Lakes.

You paddle out onto still water at dawn or in the late afternoon. Hippos surface and submerge around you. Flamingos take flight as you pass. Fish eagles watch from the trees. The only sounds are water, birds, and the dip of the paddle.

It costs almost nothing extra. It takes about two hours. And every single client who has done it with us has said the same thing: they did not expect it to be that good.

Mount Meru - For Those Who Want to Go Higher

Mount Meru stands at 4,566 metres above sea level. It is the fourth-highest peak in Africa and offers one of the best acclimatisation hikes on the continent for those planning to climb Kilimanjaro.

The summit route takes three to four days. The views from the top when the clouds clear show you Kilimanjaro floating above the horizon like something from a dream.

But you do not have to climb to the summit to experience Meru. There are day hikes through the lower forest zone, guided walks with armed rangers through buffalo and giraffe territory, and picnic sites at altitude with views across the Arusha plains that put any rooftop restaurant to shame.

How We Do the Day Trip

For most clients, we run Arusha National Park as a full day from Arusha town. We leave early, around 6:30 am, to catch the best light and the most active wildlife. We do a game drive through the park, stop at the Ngurdoto Crater rim, visit the Momella Lakes, do the canoe safari if time allows, and have a picnic lunch at one of the sites inside the park.

We are usually back in Arusha by late afternoon.

The park entry fee is USD 59 per person per day. The canoe safari is USD 25 per person. We handle all bookings in advance; no queues, no paperwork on the day.

Why We Keep Coming Back

We have been bringing clients to Arusha National Park for years. And every time, the same thing happens.

They come in expecting a pleasant enough morning before their real safari starts. They leave talking about the lakes, the colobus monkeys, the canoe, the view of Meru from the rim.

Sometimes they ask us if we can add a night inside the park on their next trip. We always say yes.

Sleeping Inside the Park and Just Beyond Its Borders - The Option Nobody Talks About

Here is something most tour operators will not tell you because they do not offer it themselves.

You can sleep inside Arusha National Park, and just outside its boundary, a handful of exceptional lodges sit close enough that the park feels like your backyard.

Inside the Park:

Momella Wildlife Lodge is one of the oldest lodges in Tanzania, sitting directly within the park boundary. Mount Meru rises above you, the Momella Lakes are visible from the grounds, and buffalo wander through at dusk. It is rustic, authentic, and completely unlike anything you will find in the Northern Circuit.

There are also designated camping sites inside the park for those who want to go further off the beaten track. Falling asleep to the sound of hippos in the lake and waking up to colobus monkeys in the trees above your tent is an experience that is genuinely hard to put a price on.

Just Outside the Park: Close Enough to Feel Inside

Hatari Lodge is perhaps the most famous property in the Arusha National Park area. Named after the 1962 John Wayne film that was shot on this very land, it sits on a private 1,500-acre conservancy bordering the park. The views of Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro from the main terrace are extraordinary. This is a genuine bucket list property.

Koroi Forest Camp sits on the edge of the park forest zone, offering an intimate tented camp experience surrounded by the sounds of the montane forest. Small, quiet, and deeply immersive, the kind of place where you wake up before your alarm because the forest does not give you a choice.

Meru Mbega Lodge is a community-focused property near the park that combines comfortable accommodation with genuine local interaction. Named after the Angolan colobus monkey, known locally as the Mbega, which you will almost certainly see in the trees on the property itself.

African View Lodge lives up to its name. Perched on a hillside with sweeping views across the Arusha plains toward Kilimanjaro, it offers the kind of morning terrace experience that makes you forget to eat your breakfast. Well-priced, well-positioned, and consistently recommended by travellers who discover it.

For clients who want to add one or two nights in or around Arusha National Park before or after their main safari, we can arrange this across all of these properties depending on your budget and preference. It pairs particularly well as an arrival experience: you land at Kilimanjaro Airport, we collect you, and instead of checking into a hotel in Arusha town, we drive you straight to the park and its surroundings.

Tanzania begins the moment you arrive.
