We have partnered with Mkuru Camel Group, a community-based cultural and environmental tourism initiative located on the northern side of Mt. Meru, west of Mt. Kilimanjaro. The project provides our clients a unique opportunity for a hands on experience with Traditional Maasai and Meru people, while contributing to the local community.
The origins of the project go back to the early 90’s when the Heifer Project selected the Mkuru community to receive some camels. The camels where donated to provide milk and assist the community with hauling and transportation, in this arid and remote zone.
A few years later the camel owners requested the assistance of Instituto Oikos, a non-profit organization, to help them in organizing the community to create the Mkuru Camel Group that would focus on tourists activities. Oikos aided the group to find sponsorship to build the Base Camp and to purchase the materials needed to start running Camel Safaris. The Initial Safaris where done under the guide of Oikos and used to train the community members.
In 2006, the members of the group took over all management and running of the Camp and the Camel Safaris. Oikos continues supporting the project by providing training for the community leaders and local guides. However, the community group has full control over the project and decides how the benefits are distributed
