Climb Ol Doinyo Lengai: Journey to the 'Mountain of God

Rising majestically in northern Tanzania near Lake Natron, Ol Doinyo Lengai is a one-of-a-kind destination for adventurers and nature enthusiasts. Known as the ‘Mountain of God’ by the Maasai people, this active volcano is the only one in the world that spews carbonatite lava, which cools to a striking white or grey. Conquering Ol Doinyo Lengai offers a rewarding experience with stunning views of the Rift Valley, Lake Natron, and neighboring highlands.

More About the Ol Doinyo Lengai Climb

Ol Doinyo Lengai is not just a hike; it’s a journey into one of Tanzania’s most dramatic landscapes. The climb is steep and challenging, taking you up 2,962 meters (9,718 feet) to the summit. The trek usually begins at night, allowing climbers to reach the peak at sunrise. The breathtaking vistas from the summit reveal Lake Natron’s shimmering salt flats, the Rift Valley escarpment, and, on clear days, Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

The volcano is still active, with occasional eruptions and unique formations of carbonatite lava. The Maasai people hold this mountain sacred, believing it to be the home of their god, Engai.

How Fit Do I Need to Be?

The climb is physically demanding due to its steep ascent and loose volcanic terrain. While prior mountaineering experience is not required, you should be in good physical shape with endurance for several hours of uphill trekking. Regular cardio and leg-strengthening exercises can help prepare you for the climb.

What to Wear?

  • Clothing: Lightweight, moisture-wicking layers to regulate temperature. Include a warm jacket for the cooler summit temperatures.
  • Footwear: Sturdy, well-broken-in hiking boots with good grip.
  • Accessories: Gloves, a headlamp (for the night ascent), sunglasses, and a hat for sun protection during the descent.
  • Backpack Essentials: Water, energy snacks, sunscreen, and trekking poles for added stability.
