Conquer Africa’s Highest Peak via The Remote Kilimanjaro Route
The 7-Day Rongai Route is the only route that approaches Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border. This lesser-traveled path offers a quiet, scenic experience, passing through wild, untouched landscapes. It is known for its gradual ascent, making it an excellent choice for beginners and those who prefer a less crowded trek. The descent follows the Marangu Route, providing diverse scenery on both ascent and descent.
Your adventure begins with your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, where you’ll be met by our team and transferred to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha. In the evening, you’ll meet your experienced mountain guide for a detailed trek briefing, final gear check, and packing recommendations. This is also your last chance to rent any missing gear before the climb. Overnight at a comfortable hotel in Moshi or Arusha..
After breakfast, we drive to Rongai Gate, where we complete registration before starting the trek. The trail winds through dense pine forest, home to black-and-white colobus monkeys. We reach Simba Camp in the late afternoon, where we rest for the night.
Today’s trek offers stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks as we ascend through moorland terrain. We reach Second Cave Camp in the afternoon, where we rest and enjoy the quiet, remote atmosphere.
We continue toward the eastern slopes of Kibo, trekking past rocky outcrops and alpine meadows. Upon reaching Kikelewa Camp, we rest while enjoying breathtaking views of the Mawenzi Peak.
A steep but rewarding climb leads us to Mawenzi Tarn Camp, nestled beneath the towering Mawenzi Peak. This is one of the most scenic camps on the route. We take an acclimatization hike in the afternoon.
This day will be spent trekking towards Kibo Hut Camp (4,720 m /15,482 f). The landscape will change significantly to become a rocky semi-desert. The actual trek is not very difficult, just remember to stick with an appropriate pace to keep up your strength for the trekking to Kilimanjaro's summit. When you reach the camp, we recommend you sleep well, avoid strenuous activity, and drink as much as you can, because that very night you will be ascending Uhuru Peak (5,895 m /19,336 f).
Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. At Gilman’s point (18,600 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa.
After spending a few moments taking in the plains of Africa and your accomplishment, we descend to Horombo Hut. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep.
The final descent takes us through lush rainforests to Mweka Gate, where you’ll receive your summit certificate before returning to Moshi or Arusha for a well-deserved rest.
A long or short safari and Zanzibar beach holiday adventure can seamlessly be arranged before or after your Kilimanjaro trek with us. For those wishing to explore Moshi Town and immerse themselves in its vibrant culture, including visits to local attractions, markets, and communities, we recommend adding an extra overnight stay. We’ve curated a dedicated guide to Moshi’s top destinations to enhance your experience. Explore Our Moshi Destination Guide Here.
If you prefer to conclude your journey after the trek, we’ll arrange a timely transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight home or onward travel.
