Summit day! We begin at midnight, trekking in the cold, dark conditions to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit, we descend slightly to Crater Camp, one of the most surreal places on Earth, nestled near Kilimanjaro’s glaciers.

Reaching the crater floor requires much dedication, but it is well worth it! When you arrive, you will be astonished by the ancient glaciers and snow. If you want, you may choose to trek further to the Ash Pit (it takes approximately 90 minutes), or save this endeavor for the next day.

  • Meals Included : Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
  • Trekking Distance: ~15km (~12–14 hours)
  • Accommodation: Crater Camp

Day 8: Crater Camp (5,790m) to Millennium Camp (3,790m)

On this day you can make another summit attempt in the morning, your general condition permitting. If you don’t want to get back to Uhuru, you can proceed with hiking out of the crater to Barafu summit camp and further down the slope to Millenium camp, your next overnight site.

Or, if you feel like it, you can go to the Ash Pit, a still warm ice-free part of the crater with a diameter of 340 m, consisting of lava gravel (in case you didn't explore it yesterday). Its whitish-yellow sulfur slopes drop about 200 m into the depth of the volcano. Together with the Reusch crater that is encircling Ash Pit, Kilimanjaro has one of the most perfect crater shapes on earth. The amount of snow in the crater will determine the possibility of getting to the Ash Pit.

  • Meals Included : Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
  • Trekking Distance: 16km (5-6 hours)
  • Accommodation: Millennium Camp

Day 9: Millennium Camp (3,790m) to Mweka Gate (1,630m) to Moshi/Arusha

Our final descent takes us through the lush rainforest, arriving at Mweka Gate for your summit certificate ceremony. A vehicle will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi/Arusha.

Camping at Crater Camp (5,790m) is a rare experience, offering unparalleled views of the glaciers and the Ash Pit. It’s a unique opportunity to explore one of Kilimanjaro’s most remote and extreme environments.
This is a challenging trek due to its length and high altitude. However, the Lemosho Route allows for gradual acclimatization, and the extra night at the crater ensures better success rates.
No, but good fitness and mental endurance are crucial. Training with cardio, hiking, and strength exercises will improve your chances of success.
With an 9-day itinerary, the success rate is around 85-90%, making it one of the most successful routes on Kilimanjaro.
You might wonder which Lemosho itinerary is more suitable for your expedition: the 7-day or 8-day variation. The 7-day itinerary begins at 3,414 m (11,200 ft), jump-starting your acclimatization. This way, you can benefit from more days on the altitude, yet this rapid altitude gain might be uncomfortable for some hikers. In addition, the first two days of this itinerary are fairly easy hikes with not much altitude gain.

In contrast, the 8-day route starts at 2,100 m (6,889 ft) and features a more challenging first day. However, starting lower, you’ll get to experience a more gradual acclimatization and enjoy hiking through a rainforest. Overall, both routes are highly recommended for climbers of all levels. They offer great acclimatization profiles, summit success rates of well over 90%, and rank among the most scenic routes on Kilimanjaro.
The 8-day variation begins at Londorossi Gate (2,250 m / 7,381 ft), whereas the 6-7 day options commence with a vehicle drop-off at 3,414 m (11,200 ft) on the Shira Plateau.
Compared to other Kilimanjaro Climb Routes, the Lemosho Route is generally less crowded, offering a quieter and more serene trekking experience with fewer fellow climbers encountered along the way.
